Social Worker Accused of Practicing Homosexual “Converstion Therapy”

LGBTQ right are constantly under attack. Personally, I feel like the current debates on gay marriage are an echo of the Civil Rights era. This can seen in the action’s of one particular social worker. Paul McNulty, a licensedIllinois social worker, has been accussed of practicing conversion therapy on patient’s. Conversion therapy is essentially therapy to “cure” a person of homosexuality. It has been discredited in every way possible. The very idea of it lacks the compassion, and client centered approach, that a social workers should employ in every session, for perpetuity.

Mental Health has a checkered history for conversion therapies. The editions II and III of the, now sacred, DSM series included homosexuality as a disorder until revision III-R in 1987.

“The American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of Social Workers have all been critical of conversion therapies, according to the complaint.”

It’s great to know they are on board. In case anyone doesn’t know, and that is what SJS is here for, 1987 is not that long ago. In fact I grew up during the 80’s, and I consider it fortunate that I was not tainted by this nonsense. Stories such as this show that there is a long way to go in the struggle for LGBTQ rights. In the larger picture, they show that human beings have a lot of growing up to do.
