The Supreme Court will hear two days of arguments for support and opposition of proposition 8, California’s ban on same sex marriage, as well as the Defense of Marriage Act starting today. Also on trial is the separation between church and state, which seems to be conveniently forgotten on issues such as abortion and gay marriage. The Supreme Court is only supposed to make rulings on matters that pertain to law, and somehow a matter of religious morality has been obscured to the point where the guaranteed civil rights of United States citizens are in jeopardy.
The Chicago Tribune’s article has a good rundown of the possible outcomes of the hearing, which include doing nothing, upholding the ban, or overturning the ruling. Regardless of the outcome, the American public must maintain its awareness that the political process has been comprised to the point where the religious beliefs of one sect could place moral constrictions on the entire population.
The consequences of ruling in favor of proposition 8 will have far reaching consequences in matters beyond same-sex marriage. A violation of the civil rights of America’s gay citizens could easily bring America into a time where the reproductive rights of woman are rolled back, and the foundation of religious freedom destroyed.

It will be a very sad day for our nation if the justices decide to rule in favor of eliminating DOMA.
There is no earthly reason why the government should be defining marriage as between a man and a woman unless religious arguments have been considered. In that case there is supposed to be a seperation between Church and State. I have not heard one plausible legal argument as to why it is necessary for national security or the public interest for the government to make such a law. It is absurd from every angle, a sad commentary on the nation every bit as much as the withholding of right’s from Woman and Black America was.
