The Research into the Effects of Back Pain

Research conducted by Nuffield Health found that millions of people end up taking a lot of time off from work because they have too much back pain that prevents them from working successfully and comfortably.

It’s also estimated that about six million individuals live with back pain that hasn’t been diagnosed. With the proper diagnosis and the right advice from a medical professional, however, the back pain could be treated or avoided. This is especially true if individuals were to receive the right early treatment and exercise tips.

Workers Suffering but Not Getting Support

The research also showed that about two-thirds of employees suffer from back pain and feel as though they aren’t supported by their employers as a result of a lack of provision. It is important that employees receive advice about how they can prevent back pain, but workstations should also be assessed to ensure that they don’t cause back pain. Also, being encouraged to exercise would further make employees feel more supported in the workplace.

Out of the 3,322 individuals throughout the United Kingdom who participated in the survey, about 49 per cent of the people said that they don’t even take any short breaks while they’re at work in order to alleviate their pain or prevent pain and injuries by moving around. Another 36 per cent stated that they suffer with lower back pain, in particular, and that affects their daily life at work and at home.

A Leading Cause of Sickness

It has been found that the UK’s biggest cause for long term sickness is back pain. In fact, it was responsible for more than 15 million sick days taken in 2013 alone. Also, roughly 3.4 million individuals, or 15 per cent of the people within the UK, have had to take over a month off from work as a result of their back pain symptoms.

Young workers who are between the ages of 24 and 35 are putting themselves at a great risk for back pain because 70 per cent of them admitted that they lead a sedentary lifestyle. Of the workers between the ages of 18 and 24, 67 per cent claim that they are not active enough either. And once back pain sets in, they are unmotivated to get moving, so the sedentary lifestyle continues.

If you are one of the millions of people who suffer with back pain, it is important to get your condition properly diagnosed by a back professional. Receiving the right treatment and exercise advice could make a big difference in how you feel.Photo by Futurilla
