Financial Social Work: Financial Wellness as a Social Work Specialty

Over two-thirds of American adults are stressed about money and over forty percent are financially illiterate. Increasing costs of living such as healthcare, housing, education, and retirement, combined with decreasing job security and stagnant wages, leave these individuals struggling to make ends meet. They need help managing their money and lives.

Social workers, trained in Financial Social Work (FSW), are equipped to practice Financial Therapy and help clients who present with various mental, emotional and financial needs in a manner that empowers them to take control of their money and their lives.

This session will demonstrate how the psychosocial FSW model, reduces the impact of money problems on financial and overall wellbeing. An overview of the strengths-based, introspective, behavioral approach will be provided. Attendees will receive original materials to enhance financial wellness for themselves and clients.
