Congresswoman Lee Calls for End to Anti-Women’s Health Rhetoric and a Return to Responsible Government

Washington, DC – As Congress rapidly approaches another GOP shutdown, Congresswoman Leereleased this statement on the attacks on women’s health and called for responsible governing:

“Today, Congress stands just seven legislative days from another manufactured GOP government shutdown that would cripple our recovering economy.

The last time the Tea Party wing shuttered the government, it cost our economy $24 billion.

Two years later, they still have not learned their lesson and are holding the government hostage as part of an active campaign to undermine Planned Parenthood and deny women access to vital healthcare.

In 2013, Planned Parenthood operated 117 clinics in California and provided healthcare services to more than 800,000 Californians, including more than 93,000 Pap tests and 97,000 breast exams.

Make no mistake, these tests save lives by detecting cancer early when it is most treatable.

Despite this lifesaving work, Republicans are holding the government hostage in their ideological War on Women.

This needs to stop.

In fact, a recent CNN/ORC International poll found that nearly three quarters of Americans think Congress should approve a budget agreement to avoid a shutdown rather than levee legislative attacks against Planned Parenthood.

It’s past time for Republicans to listen to the American people.

It’s past time that Republicans stop governing by crisis.

The American people deserve a government that works for them, not a government held hostage by an ideological War on Women.”
