Do you dread getting out of bed each day? As soon as you wake up each morning, does your mind go into overdrive with worry and negative thoughts? Are you hitting the snooze button over and over hoping to delay facing the day?

What if you could start each day overflowing with positivity? Would that help you get out of bed each morning? You can get your days off to a positive note, but you will have to put in the effort.

That’s not to say you will not experience setbacks and roadblocks during your day. But if you start your morning with a routine that is heavy on self-care and positivity, then you will be resilient enough not to let unexpected setbacks ruin your day. To help you get started , here are five simple steps to add to your morning routine.

If it helps, keep a gratitude journal by your bed and take a few minutes to both write and reflect on all that you have to be thankful for in your life.

Mindfulness Minutes

We’ve discussed how important a daily mindfulness practice is to your health and your financial wellbeing. If you find yourself having a hard time finding the time to practice mindfulness each day, then here is your chance to carve out a few minutes each day. After starting your day with a moment of gratitude, use the next ten minutes to practice mindfulness meditation.

Power of Intention

Next, focus on your intentions for the day. Have in mind a clear purpose or plan for the day. If you have a work project that needs to be completed or you want to spend a few hours during the day having quality time with family or friends, take the time to align your heart, mind, and spirit with your intention for those plans. Here are four steps for setting an intention which will help get you started.

Get Moving!

Every self-care routine should include a healthy dose of exercise. Don’t worry, you don’t have to train for a triathalon. Instead, just get moving. Start your morning with walk around the neighborhood. Enjoy a gentle yoga workout at home or in a class. Along with its physical benefits, exercise offers many mental health benefits including mood enhancement.

Renourish and Energize

Don’t skip your morning meal. It’s something we often hear, but as busy adults we often find ourselves rushing out of the house with no food in our body and a cup of coffee in our hand. To carry the positive mental attitude you’ve been working on each morning, make sure to eat a healthy, breakfast to renourish and energize your body. Some people suggest starting the day with a glass of freshly squeezed lemon water followed by an organic green smoothie. Experiment and find what works for you. Most importantly, find something you can commit to each morning.

Remember, the above steps are just suggestions for getting your day off to a positive start. Just as we suggested when we said to find a healthy breakfast routine that you can commit to, you should also find a self-care routine that works for you. That may include pairing your mindfulness practice with your morning walk. Or, it may involve staying off of your smartphone each morning until you get to the office. If you need more ideas on how to begin each day on a positive note, here’s 22 ways to wake up and feel positive for the day.
