A Political Decision Swayed by Words: The Nevada Equal Marriage Amendment

It’s hard sometimes to believe that our words have meanings, especially in politics when so many decisions are made based on where the money rests. On Monday, one member of Nevada’s Senate proved just how important our words and lives are to the political decision making process. Nevada was debating an act which would repeal a ban on same-sex marriage in the state when Senator Kelvin Atkinson announced to his colleagues that he was gay. This was the first time many of those present knew about his sexuality, and the statement did not come without a sense of hesitation on Atkinson’s part. You can watch the video here at NPR’s website.

What was the outcome of this debate you might asked? The Senate approved the amendment in a 12-9 vote and it now goes to the full assembly. I don’t personally know if Atkinson’s statement swayed any votes, and 3 votes isn’t a big margin, but to me this is indeed a success. It is a kind reminder that politicians are still people, and perhaps they need to think as such when making decisions for their citizens. So, thank you Atkinson for your service to Nevada, and for speaking out in a tough arena!
