“The Mirror”

“The Mirror”

As I stare at my reflection in the mirror
I see a fuzzy image.

I’m not sure exactly what I see,
for there seems to be many images staring back at me.

I see the beauty of the person within,
like a rose bud that slowly opens in a color of pale pink.

I see the sadness
like a sparrow that cannot sing.

I see the confusion,
the not knowing why
I feel the way I do.

I see the flicker of a flame
that is slowly working its way up,
and will eventually burn into a roaring fire.

I see the image of someone
who is trying hard,
to do everything
they can.

I see a dream slowly evolving,
the goals that will be met.

These images that I see
are the many feelings
of the person within me.

The beauty, the sadness,
the confusion, the fire
and the dream seeker.

We all have many images inside us,
but looking into the mirror
makes them all the more real.

The mirror represents our internal dialogue and vision of self at various points in time.

This poem was written soon after I returned to college full-time from a ‘sabbatical’ where I worked full-time and attended community college part-time.
