Delhi Gang Rape Victim Dies in Singapore Hospital

The Gang rape victim whose violent assault on a bus in Delhi sparked recent protests has passed away from her injuries in a Singapore Hospital. As her funeral took place in India, calls for action continued to pour in from those in India and abroad. Candle light vigils and protests continued after in India, where the BBC quoted one social worker as saying:

“This incident should open our eyes to the fact that we need to raise our children right, we need to raise the people right,” said protester and social worker Murphy John.

He said he did not agree with calls for the death penalty for convicted rapists, fearing it would encourage murder so victims could not report crimes.”

Social Justice Solutions sends their condolences to the victim of this crime, and all of those women who suffer similar crimes in India. We fully support motions both nationally and internationally to address this issue. Perhaps social workers in India such as Murphy John can be a face in the movement to nationally improve the conditions of women there, and maybe even beyond. As UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon states “”Violence against women must never be accepted, never excused, never tolerated,” the statement said. “Every girl and woman has the right to be respected, valued and protected.””  This isn’t an issue that will be easily resolved. Norms and attitudes will need to be changed and this will require a united front.
